Gregg Berhalter Fired as US Men's National Soccer Team Head Coach

Former Player and Coach Let Go After Copa America Disappointment

Gregg Berhalter has been fired as the head coach of the United States men's national soccer team following the team's disappointing performance at the Copa America. The United States was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the tournament by eventual champion Argentina. This is the second time in a row that the United States has failed to reach the semi-finals of the Copa America, after also being eliminated in the quarterfinals in 2019.

Berhalter's firing comes just two years before the 2026 World Cup, which the United States will host along with Canada and Mexico. The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) has not yet announced a replacement for Berhalter.

Berhalter, a former United States national team player, was hired as head coach in 2018. He led the team to victory in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification. However, the team's performance at the Copa America was seen as a major disappointment.

In a statement, USSF president Cindy Parlow Cone said that the federation is "committed to building a successful men's national team program" and that the decision to fire Berhalter was made "after careful consideration."
