A shooting at a popular entertainment area in Birmingham, Alabama, has left at least four people dead and multiple others injured, according to police.

The shooting occurred shortly before midnight on Saturday in the city's Five Points South neighborhood, a popular nightlife destination with bars, restaurants, and shops.

Police say the suspect, identified as a 21-year-old male, opened fire on a crowd of people outside a bar.

The victims, who have not yet been identified, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended by police.

Police are still investigating the motive for the shooting, but they say it appears to be a random act of violence.

"This is a senseless tragedy that has claimed the lives of innocent people," said Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith.

"We are working to bring the person responsible to justice and to provide support to the victims and their families."
